A panic attack happens when the body produces very powerful chemicals in fight or flight mode to help you escape from a dangerous situation. Unfortunately, we often don’t understand why that response has been triggered – it can be when at home watching TV for instance. Because panic attacks can be so unpleasant, sufferers often find they become fearful of the ‘next one’ – which leads their anxiety to rise and increase the likelihood of another attack and so they get trapped in a vicious circle that is difficult to get out of. It is also common for someone who has experienced a panic attack to become fearful of, or to avoid, the situation in which they experienced the attack. So they may avoid driving, the supermarket or a crowded room. It is a horrible situation to be in – I know, I suffered from panic attacks for sometime but know that we can untangle ourselves from their grip.
