Everything You’ve Ever Wondered About Hypnotherapy Your questions answered, honestly and clearly.
If you’ve been curious about hypnotherapy — whether it actually works, what it feels like, or whether it’s right for you — you’re not alone. We hear these questions every day. So we’ve put together the most common ones, with answers that are honest, clear, and free of any mystique.
THE BASICS
What actually is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses a guided state of deep relaxation — known as hypnosis — to help you make positive changes in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Think of it less like the theatrical “you’re getting sleepy” version you’ve seen on TV, and more like a deeply focused, calm state where your mind becomes more open to helpful suggestions. During hypnosis, you’re not asleep and you’re not unconscious. You’re simply in a relaxed, receptive state — similar to that lovely moment just before you drift off to sleep, where your mind is quiet but still aware.
Is hypnotherapy the same as stage hypnosis? Absolutely not. Stage hypnosis is entertainment — performers select highly suggestible volunteers and use social pressure and showmanship to get laughs. Therapeutic hypnosis is something quite different. Clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative, respectful process. You remain in control at all times. A hypnotherapist works with you — not on you — to help you access your own inner resources and shift unhelpful patterns.
Will I be in control? Can I be made to do things against my will? Yes, you are always in control. This is one of the most important things to understand about hypnotherapy. You cannot be made to say, think, or do anything that conflicts with your values or that you don’t want to do. Your subconscious mind acts as a natural filter. If a suggestion doesn’t feel right, your mind simply won’t accept it. Many clients are surprised to find that they feel more in control of their thoughts after hypnotherapy — not less.
What does being hypnotised actually feel like? Most people describe it as an incredibly pleasant state of deep relaxation — physically heavy and comfortable, while mentally clear and focused. You may notice your breathing slows, your muscles soften, and everyday worries seem to step back. You’ll be aware of what’s happening around you and can hear your therapist’s voice clearly. It’s not unusual to wonder afterwards “was I actually hypnotised?” — because it feels so natural. That’s entirely normal.
HOW IT WORKS
How does hypnotherapy actually help? Our habits, fears, and emotional responses are largely shaped by our subconscious mind — the part that runs quietly in the background. Conventional talking therapy works primarily with the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy allows us to gently access the subconscious level, where lasting change tends to happen more efficiently. By working in this relaxed, focused state, a hypnotherapist can help you reframe negative thought patterns, reduce the emotional charge attached to past experiences, build new healthier habits and responses, and strengthen your self-belief and confidence.
What happens during a typical session? A session usually begins with a conversation — your therapist will want to understand what you’re hoping to achieve, ask about your background, and answer any questions you have. This also helps you feel comfortable before anything else begins. Then comes the hypnosis itself: a guided induction that brings you into a relaxed state, followed by therapeutic work tailored to your goals. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes. Afterwards, you’ll be gently brought back to full awareness feeling refreshed, calm, and often lighter than when you arrived.
How many sessions will I need? This genuinely varies from person to person and depends on what you’re working on. Some issues — such as a specific phobia or stopping smoking — may respond well in just 1–3 sessions. Others, such as deep-rooted anxiety, low self-esteem, or trauma, may benefit from a longer course of therapy. At On The Couch, we work collaboratively with you to set a realistic plan. We’ll always be transparent about progress and never keep you in therapy longer than is useful.
Is hypnotherapy done in person or online? Both! Online hypnotherapy via video call is just as effective as in-person work — something that has been well-established in recent years. In fact, many clients find it even easier to relax in the comfort of their own home. All you need is a quiet space, a comfortable chair or sofa, a stable internet connection, and headphones if possible. At On The Couch, we offer both options to suit your lifestyle.
WHAT CAN IT HELP WITH?
What conditions can hypnotherapy help with? Hypnotherapy has a broad range of applications. Common areas where it can be particularly effective include anxiety and stress (including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, and panic attacks), phobias such as fear of flying, needles, spiders, or heights, sleep difficulties and insomnia, confidence and self-esteem issues including performance anxiety and imposter syndrome, stopping smoking, weight management and eating habits, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — which is NHS-recognised for hypnotherapy — grief and loss, pain management, and low mood and depression alongside appropriate medical support. Not sure if your situation fits? Simply reach out — we’re happy to have an honest conversation about whether hypnotherapy could help you.
Is hypnotherapy evidence-based? Does it actually work? Yes. There is a growing and solid body of research supporting hypnotherapy for a number of conditions. The NHS, for example, recognises hypnotherapy as an effective treatment for IBS. Studies have demonstrated its effectiveness for anxiety, phobias, pain management, and smoking cessation. That said, hypnotherapy works best when you’re genuinely open to the process and committed to change. It isn’t a magic fix, but for the right person and the right issue, it can be remarkably powerful.
Are there situations where hypnotherapy isn’t suitable? Hypnotherapy is very safe, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone in every circumstance. We would approach with care (or refer elsewhere) for clients experiencing active psychosis or certain personality disorders, epilepsy, or severe clinical depression without appropriate medical support. We always take a full history before beginning work, and your safety is our absolute priority. If hypnotherapy isn’t the right fit, we’ll say so honestly and point you towards more appropriate support.
COMMON WORRIES
What if I can’t be hypnotised? Almost everyone can enter hypnosis to some degree — it’s a natural state that we all experience in everyday life (that absorbed feeling when you’re deep in a book, or arrive somewhere without quite remembering the drive). The ability to be hypnotised is not about being weak-willed or gullible; in fact, imaginative, intelligent, and focused people often make the best hypnotherapy clients. Depth of trance varies between people and even between sessions, but even a light state of relaxation can be highly therapeutic. Your therapist will work with wherever you are.
Will I remember what happens during the session? Most people remember the session clearly, much like recalling a vivid daydream. A small number of people enter a deeper state where recall is hazier — similar to how you might remember a dream on waking. Either way, this doesn’t affect how well the therapy works. You won’t say anything you don’t want to say, and you won’t reveal secrets. Hypnotherapy isn’t truth serum.
Is hypnotherapy safe? Yes — hypnotherapy is a very safe therapeutic approach when practised by a qualified, ethical professional. There are no drugs involved, nothing is done without your consent, and you cannot get “stuck” in hypnosis (this is a common myth — you would simply drift off to sleep naturally and wake on your own). At On The Couch, we are fully trained, insured, and committed to working within ethical guidelines. Your wellbeing comes first in everything we do.
How is a hypnotherapist different from a psychologist or counsellor?Psychologists and counsellors primarily work through conscious, verbal exploration of thoughts and feelings. Hypnotherapy works more directly with the subconscious mind, often producing change more quickly for certain issues — particularly ingrained habits, phobias, and anxiety patterns. Many hypnotherapists (including at On The Couch) integrate elements of CBT, mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches alongside hypnosis, offering a rounded, holistic style of therapy. The approaches are complementary, not competing.
GETTING STARTED
How do I know if hypnotherapy is right for me? If you’re open to it, that’s already a great sign. Hypnotherapy tends to work best for people who are motivated to change, willing to engage with the process, and ready to take an active role in their own wellbeing. The best way to find out is simply to have a conversation. We offer a no-pressure initial consultation where you can ask questions, share what’s going on for you, and get a feel for whether working together feels right. There’s no obligation.
What should I do to prepare for my first session? Very little preparation is needed. You might find it helpful to think about what you most want to achieve from therapy, and to jot down any questions you have. Wear comfortable clothing, avoid heavy meals beforehand, and try to arrive (or log on) with a few minutes to spare so you’re not rushing. Most importantly — come with an open mind. You don’t need to believe in hypnotherapy for it to work; you just need to be willing to give it a go.
How do I book a session with On The Couch Hypnotherapy? It’s simple. Get in touch through the On The Couch website to book a free initial consultation or ask any questions you might have. We aim to respond promptly, and we’ll take it gently from there — no hard sell, no pressure. We look forward to speaking with you.
